VAT in the UAE: A Legal Obligation for All Businesses

Since its rollout on January 1, 2018, Value Added Tax (VAT) has become a core component of the UAE’s tax framework. Businesses across the country, including those in Sharjah, are legally required to apply VAT to their taxable transactions. Adapting to this system hasn't been easy for all—many companies still struggle with the legal and procedural complexities.

What Is VAT or Value Added Tax?

VAT, or Value Added Tax, is a form of indirect taxation applied to the sale of goods and services throughout the supply chain. Though it’s collected by businesses, the actual cost is borne by the final consumer. In the UAE, a 5% VAT rate is enforced by the government on most eligible transactions.

How Is VAT Implied In The UAE?

Businesses are obligated to register for VAT if their taxable supplies, imports, or expenses during the last 12 months exceed the mandatory threshold of AED 375,000. Once this threshold is crossed, VAT registration becomes compulsory under UAE tax law.

Moreover, businesses can also opt for voluntary VAT registration if their total taxable supplies, imports, or expenses over the past 12 months surpass AED 187,500, the official voluntary registration limit set by the FTA.
