What Is Corporate Tax in the UAE?

UAE Corporate Tax was introduced under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022 and applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. It is administered and collected by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) through the EmaraTax portal.

Who must register? Mainland companies, free zone companies (even those paying 0%), foreign companies with a permanent establishment in the UAE, and individuals whose business turnover exceeds AED 1 million a year.

Who is exempt? Government entities, qualifying public benefit organisations, qualifying investment funds and businesses engaged in extracting natural resources, subject to conditions.

When was corporate tax introduced in the UAE?

UAE corporate tax applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022.

What is the corporate tax rate in the UAE?

0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. Large multinational groups with global revenue of EUR 750 million or more pay a 15% minimum rate under the Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax.

Who needs to register for corporate tax in the UAE?

Almost all UAE businesses must register with the FTA, including mainland companies, free zone companies and individuals with business turnover above AED 1 million a year. Registration is required even if your tax payable is zero.

What is the corporate tax registration deadline for new companies?

Companies incorporated from 1 March 2024 must register within 3 months of their incorporation date. Late registration attracts an AED 10,000 penalty.

Do free zone companies pay corporate tax?

A Qualifying Free Zone Person pays 0% on qualifying income but must still register, keep audited financial statements and file a return. Non-qualifying income is taxed at 9%.

When is the UAE corporate tax return due?

The return and any tax payable are due within 9 months after the end of the financial year. For a year ending 31 December 2025, the deadline is 30 September 2026.

What is Small Business Relief?

Resident businesses with revenue of AED 3 million or less in a tax period can elect Small Business Relief and be treated as having no taxable income, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026. Conditions apply.

Are there any exemptions from corporate tax?

Yes. Government entities, qualifying public benefit entities, qualifying investment funds, pension funds and some extractive businesses can be exempt, subject to FTA conditions.

How long must I keep accounting records?

UAE businesses must keep accounting records and supporting documents for at least 7 years after the end of the tax period.
